25News Peoria: Foundation aims to reduce risk of kidney disease with free screenings

PEORIA (25News Now) - Free kidney screenings were offered Wednesday in Peoria with the goal of educating people about kidney disease, particularly people of color.

The screenings at Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ on Elm Street were hosted by the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois, using its Kidney Mobile.

The organization aims to help people achieve a healthy lifestyle.

“Uncontrolled high blood pressure and uncontrolled diabetes are the leading causes of kidney disease. A lot of times in the African American communities we suffer from high blood pressure and diabetes. So, that is why one in three are more likely to develop kidney disease,” said Regina White, the Kidney Mobile’s senior manager.

White recommends yearly checks for kidney disease.
