Keri H, is the proud mother of eight wonderful children and grandmother to two amazing grandchildren. She is also a two-time kidney transplant recipient navigating the ups and downs of living with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Her journey began at 15 years old when she was diagnosed with lupus, a life-changing moment that would eventually impact her kidney health. Keri faced kidney failure and through the selflessness of her wonderful sister, she received the most precious gift of life. Without her she would not have the strength and freedom to continue being there for her family.
Now, twenty-seven years later Keri finds herself waiting for a third transplant. This time, the journey has been shorter—three months so far. For Keri, it’s the simple joys like walking in nature with her kids, and embracing the freedom to live fully. Right now, her days are shaped by the wait.
Keri also appreciates the wealth of resources the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois offers to individuals and families affected by CKD. There is so much more to learn about living with this condition, and she’s grateful for the opportunities they provide to educate and empower people.
To anyone reading Keri’s story, Her piece of advice: keep living your life, but take precautions. If you’re able to, take care of your body, cherish your health, and prioritize your well-being. Life with CKD can be challenging, but with the right care and support, you can continue moving forward.
Keri looks forward to the day that she can embrace those nature walks again and enjoy life to its fullest with her children and grandchildren. Until then, She remain hopeful, patient, and grateful for the gift of life that a kidney transplant will bring me.
